WORLD SPACE WEEK CELEBRATIONS – 2017

 

World Space Week (WSW) is an important international event celebrated since 1999 all over the world. The week long celebrations held from October 4 to 10 of every year, commemorate two milestones in Space exploration; 4th October marking the launch of the first man-made satellite, Sputnik-1 in 1957 and 10th October marking the day on which the UN declaration for peaceful uses of outer Space came into force in 1967.

As a part of World Space Week (WSW) the students of Post Graduate and Research Department of Physics, Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram, conducted a week long celebrations held from October 4 to 10, 2017 wrapped up with ‘ZVEZDA’ – the space expo.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. M.R Sudarshanakumar, Principal, Mahatma Gandhi College in the function presided by Dr. B Sureshkumar Associate Professor and Head, Department of Physics..

Dr V.M Anandakumar, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Mahatma Gandhi College and a former scientist, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram delivered a talk on “Remote Sensing- Indian Space Odyssey”.   .

Three interdepartmental competitions were conducted for the students – (1) An imaginary travelogue on the topic “IF I WERE IN SPACE” (2) Flash presentation on any space related topics and (3) Poster presentation on any topic relating to space.

October 9, 2017 witnessed a miraculous event, “TREASURE HUNT”. With the mystifying clues provided, the entire college enthusiastically took up this challenge. The hunt that started from Final year degree class  waved completely through the college premises..

A space expo “ZVEZDA” conducted on October 9-11 gave a new exposure to the students and created a better awareness among them on space. The expo arranged at the college auditorium was inaugurated by the Principal Dr M R Sudarsanakumar. The exhibition was also opened for the school students. Students from St.Marys Higher Secondary School, Pattom, NSS Higher Secondary School, Kesavadasapuram and   Mahila Mandiram English Medium School, Poojapura visited the expo.

Dr.Deepa.M Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, VTMNSS College, Dhanuvachapuram delivered a talk on the “The thin Blue Cozy Blanket, Our Atmosphere-An Introduction”on the concluding day of the celebrations.
