Zoology Fest – ZOOFEST 2018
The Department of Zoology celebrated their fest on February 15th 2018.The programme was coordinated by the students under supervision of the teaching faculties. The name of the zoofest was Parinaam 2k18.The programme was inaugurated by the Principal Dr.M.R.Sudarsanakumar. On the occasion the welcome speech was delivered by Dr.(Lt.)Balamurali R.S.,Head of the Department followed by a Keynote address by Principal and Dr. M.S.Anil Kumar, IQAC coordinator felicitated the function. The Principal officially inaugurated the butterfly garden and planted a sapling in the garden.The butterfly garden layout and designing was done by the zoology students. It took around 2weeks for the butterfly garden to be set. The technical support was given by KFRI,Peechi .Department of botany of Mahatma Gandhi college had been kind enough to donate some fund for plants and also provided suggestions for setting the garden. The students were encouraged by the Principal for the initiative taken for biodiversity conservation and also were provided fund to install a pond. The students had set marine aquarium for display and installed an aquaponics model to show the new trend in agriculture which involve cultivation of fishes along with vegetable farming which utilises the ammonia water from the fishes. This organic type farming techniques ensures the farmers to market healthy pesticide free vegetables in market .The students displayed colourful charts of butterflies showing their local names to provide information for visitors to identify common butterflies around them. A model of vermi-compost was also set to make the visitors aware of the need of solid waste management at home and campus. The students also very actively prepared and displayed very informative charts on oncology, parasitology, lifestyle diseases, ill effects of smoking etc .The still and working models on the organ system, circadian rhythm were also displayed to enlighten the visitors on the working of human body. The model of evolution were prepared and displayed in IIIDC class room .The students displayed the volcanoes, ice age, the formation of earth etc .There was also display of a few exotic animal like finches, diamond dove, cats for the entertainment .The documentaries related to evolution were displayed for enthusiastic visitors. The zoofest also hosted a mouth-watering food fest-“Naville Ruchi”. The programme also involved the display of museum specimen. The museum houses some of the rare specimens and it has several stuffed animals like crocodile, pangolin, wild cat, pelican etc. There were around 700 visitors who attended the function and the programme received an excellent feedback.
