DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The Department of Chemistry, one of the prestigious departments in Mahatma Gandhi College, started functioning in the year 1948. B.Sc. course was started in 1955 and M.Sc in 2001. The University of Kerala had recognized the Department to conduct M.Phil course for a period of three years (1991 – 1994). The Department was approved as a recognized Research Centre for PhD of the Kerala University, in 2006. It was selected for the SARD project in 2006 by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE, Govt. of Kerala). The Department received national recognition when it was selected for FIST programme by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India in 2007. The department Faculty has successfully carried out nine minor research projects of UGC and two major research projects of KSCSTE. All the eight faculty members of the department have doctoral degree and three have postdoctoral fellowship. Five faculties are recognized guides for Ph.D programme. Twenty doctoral degrees are already produced from the department. Fourteen students are doing Ph.D in the department. The faculties of the department have published more than 100 articles in International and national journals and presented many papers in national conferences. Nine research guides from other institutions are approved guides in this centre. The department organizes various programmes for the overall development of the students. Tutorial sessions and Parent-Teacher-Student (PTS) interactions are held periodically to evaluate and improve the performance of the department. The department organizes presentations by students on various aspects of chemistry. The students are also encouraged to attend seminars, workshops and quiz competitions. The students have brought many laurels in many intercollegiate quiz competitions. There is a tie up with Foundation for Capacity Building in Sciences (FCBS), Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) and Academy of Chemistry Teachers (ACT) and the faculty and students participate in their activities. The faculty members of the department are members of many academic bodies in the University. The faculty and students participate in extension activities and are involved in the awareness of current environmental issues.
