National Space Day celebration
The Department of Physics at Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram, celebrated National Space Day from 21st to 23rd August 2024 with a series of events designed to spark interest and enthusiasm for space science among students. The three-day celebration commenced on 21st August with a caption writing competition, which encouraged participants to creatively capture the essence of space exploration with a few impactful words that described the given image. This was followed by a range of creative competitions next day, including an essay competition, poetry recital, painting, and pencil drawing, where students had the opportunity to showcase their talents and express their fascination with space. The essay competition had 3 registrations, with 2 participants engaging actively, while the poetry event had 2 registered participants, both of whom participated. The pencil drawing competition saw 5 registrations with 4 participants taking part in the event.
On 22nd August, the activities continued with a Treasure Hunt, where teams competed to solve clues based on space science topics. The event had 11 registered teams, of which 8 teams actively participated, providing a fun and educational experience for all involved. The climax of the celebration came on 23rd August, with two main events: a Space Quiz and a Water Rocket Launch demonstration. The Space Quiz attracted 11 registrations with 10 teams or individuals participating, showcasing their knowledge of space science and technology. The event concluded with a live demonstration of a Water Rocket Launch, which attracted audience from across the college and provided a practical display of physics principles in action.
